Welcome to Y-COP!

YCOP Brochure 2015_Page_1YCOP Brochure 2015_Page_2The Youth Community Outreach Program (Y-COP) was founded in 1990 by Allen Ayers, former Detective of the Mount Vernon Police Department. His goal was to foster a positive relationship between youth and police by offering activities that build children’s self-esteem. After much success, Y-COP was incorporated as a municipal non-profit 501(c)(3) agency. Y-COP programs included a competitive cheerleading squad, basketball league, job skill workshops, peer-to-peer mediation, and college preparation, just to name a few. Youth who have participated in Y-COP have pursued college, and currently have careers in education, government, law enforcement and more.

Due to lack of space to operate, Y-COP youth programs have not been offered for the past few years. With the help of youth advocate and community activist and a newly established Board of Directors, Allen Ayers will re-introduce Y-COP youth programs to the community of Mount Vernon. This groups of dedicated individuals have coordinated to offer a camp this summer to jumpstart Y-COP programming.

From July 9 through August 17, fifty children can attend the Y-COP summer camp. The Y-COP camp will feature recreational, educational and cultural activities. Recreational activities will include dance, tennis, swimming, soccer, and basketball. Educational activities will include the summer reading program, educational board games and more. Scheduled field trips include the Botanical Gardens, the Bronx Zoo, the Mount Vernon Public Library and more. All of these activities will be led by highly qualified staff in a safe and nurturing environment.

The Y-COP camp will offer other amenities to help parents as well. Each camper will receive a bag of groceries from the Food Bank for Westchester. They will receive a Y-COP camp tee-shirt to wear on field trip days. The shirts were sponsored by Bogopa, parent company for Food Bazaar. Children will enjoy a healthy, nutritious lunch, courtesy of the Mount Vernon City School District.
